The Highlight Of My Week… Grocery Shopping?

The other day I took my daughter grocery shopping with me.  At first I thought it was going to be a “hurry up and finish” experience but it ended up being the highlight of my week.  We just talked the whole time.  She didn’t ask me to buy her everything in sight.  She didn’t complain and whine about having to be there.  We just walked along together and actually talked.  She is 8 years old so that doesn’t normally happen.

Don’t get me wrong, she is a big talker.  She talks and talks… but this was an actual conversation and for me that is a precious thing!  She asked me questions; not just what is this or what is that, but things like what was it like when I grew up.  I could tell she really cared.  And the next thing I knew I was the one who talked and talked and talked and she actually listened.  She was genuinely interested in me as a person and not just as a dad.  It was a wonderfully wierd feeling…

I found myself truly enjoying the grocery store!  I have a picture in my mind from the drive home.  I see her sitting in the front seat, her elbow propped up on the window ledge with her face resting on the palm of her hand.  She is looking at me with a happy, serious expression and she says to me, “Daddy, I love talking to you.”

Then, of course, she says, “Stop crying Dad!”  She hates it when I cry…

Be the first to like.
