It was warm today! It was finally warm. I think that some of the happiest times of the whole year are the first warm days of spring. The entire neighborhood seems to come alive. All of a sudden you are surrounded by friends again. People become kinder and more relaxed. The streets are filled with children playing and parents talking. The park near our home is transformed from a lifeless pile of plastic and metal into pirate ships and fairy castles. It’s as if all of the energy of the last several months is bursting out of everyone in an uncontainable expression of pure happiness. In this way, people are like flowers. They hold in so much energy over the long months of winter. Then, when the warmth of the newborn spring sunlight finally hits their faces, they burst open into vibrant, beautiful blossoms. And for a moment, everyone is excited and full of joy.
With the dawning of springtime, the world becomes beautiful again. Color and softness return. The air becomes energized. Sights, sounds and even smells are enriched. It’s as if you have jumped from an old black and white film into the Garden of Eden. Trees become dotted with buds trembling with potential and the ground seeps green. Green . . . to me this is the most beautiful of colors as it means life has returned to the world.
I especially love to hear the squeals of joy coming from the children as they run and play. No longer are they confined with “indoor” rules . . . they can run, jump, scream and finally let go. For a child, it is true freedom. This afternoon I sat on my back porch with the sun on my face and listened to the sounds of springtime. I felt peace.
I am so grateful for this special season when our hearts are focused on renewal and joy is a natural feeling. I am thankful to live in a place where winter exists because through it, I can experience this wondrous transformation that is Spring.
